Mission Statement
The Mission of the St. Johns County Horse Council is to promote, defend and propagate equestrian interests in St. Johns County through its inclusion and representation of all equine enthusiasts in our county.

Annual SJCHC Meeting & Play Day September 25th
@ the SJC Equestrian Center!

Make a day of it at the SJCHC Equestrian Center on Smith Rd., just outside of Hastings. Bring your horses (negative Coggins required), compete in the Games, participate in the Tack Swap, and see all your “horsey” friends.

Morning Schedule:
Barrels – Poles – Musical Sacks
Check-in – 9:00AM
Games Begin 9:30AM for a flat fee – $10-members $15-nonmembers

Lunch:
Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Chips, Drinks, Water, and Baked Goods available for purchase.

Afternoon Schedule:
Check-in - 1:00PM
Games Begin 1:30PM for a flat fee $10-members $15-nonmembers
Afternoon Games Include: Egg & Spoon – Red Light/Green Light – Ride a Buck
Afternoon Games followed by 1st and 2nd place winners from
All 6 classes in a face-off for the Grand Championship
No Extra Fees
Awards will be presented for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Tack Swap:
Gather your unwanted tack or anything equine and bring them with you to swap

  • Florida Governor Signs Youth Equestrian Helmet Law. Florida Governor Charlie Crist yesterday signed HB 169, a bill that mandates the use of protective helmets by young equestrians when riding on public property or roads. Details at the horse.com or read the law here.

Startup
The St. Johns County Horse Council was established in 1999 when a public meeting was held at the County Agricultural Center to examine means to prevent a pending law to prohibit riding on the Public Beaches of St.Johns County. The attendance was outstanding - over 300 people attended. The urgency of this general meeting and the large turnout were a direct response by equestrians preserve riding rights in the County. Since that time the Council has become involved in promoting all types of equine activities and raising awareness regarding the economic impact of horses in our county.

On Going Efforts
Our efforts include:

  • General Meetings are held quarterly in January, April, July and October and are open to all horse owners and enthusiasts. Please check back on the site or email the president for venue and exact dates.
  • Board meetings are held monthly on the second monday of each month. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact the President by email.
  • Publicity SJCHC informs horse owners about riding areas
  • Safety
    • SJCHC has a Helmet program to help distribute high quality Troxel helmets to St. Johns County.
    • Working with city, county, and state officials to establish evacuation routes and procedures during severe weather
  • Negotiation
    The SJCHC negotiates with Federal, State and Local agencies to preserve the rights to ride in the county, The preservation of riding lands and the initiation of riding trails, centers and other riding places.
  • Horse Population Research
    In order to validate the significance of horses locally, SJCHC has an interest in determining the number of horses in St. Johns County. Comprehensive study is being planed to measure the economic impact of the horse industry in St. Johns County. The Council hopes to work with UF-IFAS
